The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the apex body for food and drug products, has reportedly suspended the licence of Johnson & Johnson, the multinational healthcare and consumer products major, to manufacture cosmetic products at their Mulund plant.

As per reports, the order was issued in a case dating back to 2007 when residues of carcinogenic substances were found in 15 batches of Johnson & Johnson baby powder. And later it was found out that the residue was found because that the talcum powder was sterilised by ethylene oxide which in is carcinogenic and irritant.

As per a report in The New Indian Express, Kamlesh B Shende, FDA joint commissioner (drugs), said: “There were unacceptable levels of ethylene oxide, which is a trigger for cancer. Ethylene oxide was being used to bring down microbial load in the powder by sterilisation. But it was found that there was ethylene oxide residue in the talcum powder, which is primarily used on infants. In light of this, we have suspended the licence.”

The spokesperson of Johnson & Johnson was quoted in the report saying, “The FDA raised concerns about following ethylene oxide treatment, which was not included as part of the manufacturing process submitted to the FDA.”

As per the reports, the order will become effective from 24 June.

Ever wonder about the list of ingredients in your thickening, lengthening, smudge-proof, waterproof, clump-free mascara that give you those ‘to die for’ lashes? Or the shelf life of your products?

We are exposed to hundreds of chemicals found solely in our cosmetics products on a daily basis. While the industry claims that they use such small quantities of these ingredients that they pose no hazard to our health, what the industry fails to emphasize is that frequency of use can cause these toxic chemicals to start posing a threat to our well being.

By decoding and familiarizing yourself with the following four carcinogens commonly found in cosmetics products, you will be able to introduce healthier makeup to your daily regimen effortlessly.

Synthetic fragrances are a common ingredient in many beauty products. More than five thousand chemicals are used to make a single bottle of fragrance. As a result, cosmetic products containing synthetic fragrances contain upwards of two hundred chemicals, making it impossible to know exactly which chemicals you are being exposed to when you use these products.

Genetically modified ingredients are those produced through the direct manipulation of a plant or organism’s genes through genetic engineering. Genetic engineering uses the technique of cloning to alter structure and characteristics. Plant or seed derived ingredients, such as genetically modified soy, are found in soaps, cosmetics, shampoo and body washes.

Phthalates a substance often added to plastics to increase flexibility. Phthalates are used to make fragrances, cosmetics, nail polish and plastic packaging. When absorbed by the human body, phthalates are stored in fat cells and immerse into the blood stream

Parabens and petrochemicals are synthetic preservatives added to cosmetics. They are used as inhibitors of microbial growth and extend product shelf life. Studies have shown that parabens may directly affect the endocrine system and are known carcinogens.

It is common to be overwhelmed when you start to limit the use of your toxic products. As a guide, apply the following three tips before you make your next purchase at the beauty counter:

Look for certified organic labelling, such as USDA

Read the label to determine what the product does NOT contain

Utilize www.cosmeticsdatabase.com to help rate the level of toxicity (0 being the safest).

Look for ultra-pure color cosmetic lines which base their products on living and organic principles and in turn offer more out of their products without sacrificing quality or luxury (such as RMS Beauty). I encourage you to search and uncover some of your favourite, guilt-free organic beauty brands and thoroughly embrace the feeling of knowing your complexion is glowing without harmful side effects.

7 Reasons Why You Should Consider Joining A Network Marketing Company

With the current state of the economy and the recent recession, more and more people are scrambling around out of desperation, looking for ways to earn an extra income just to make ends meet. The recent tough economic times have forced people to take on second and third jobs, if they can even find one. Thousands have lost their homes and now don’t know where to turn and you can help. A single day job is just not enough to cover those staggering monthly expenses that seem to keep rising with no end in site.

If you’re looking to generate the amount of compensation that you deserve, why not consider joining a network marketing company? This multi-billion dollar industry called network marketing offers not only a vast wealth of income, but also limitless possibilities based on your efforts and the efforts of your team.

The list is endless as to why people decide to team up with this industry, but here are a few key reasons why you should strongly consider joining a Network Marketing Company for yourself:

1. Network Marketing is Great for Personal Development

Network Marketing is great for promoting and enforces personal development to any individual who joins the industry. It doesn’t just assist you with earning great amounts of money (although that is a great benefit to the industry), it also aids you in assisting others in achieving their dream of financial independence.

The system of network marketing is built in a way that you don’t make much income unless you help others. It is not the model to use if you only prefer to focus solely on yourself and not taech what you know with others around you. This industry is an “Each One Teach One” setting, allowing you to impact others around you who too desire to accomplish more in life and live their dreams.

The great thing about network marketing is this, not only does it develop your business skills, it also helps you become a better leader, teacher and mentor to others around you and can truly enhance your life in all aspects.

The key to wealth is this, “If you help enough people get what they want, you in turn will get what you want!”

2. It Is Very Important To Have Accountability Partners In Network Marketing

You will find yourself surrounded by numerous accountability partners that will help you build your business accordingly. They will work with you hand in hand to make sure that you reach your goals.

The mission of these partners is to hold you accountable on your conduct, provide feedback when needed, support your endeavors, and encourage your growth as a business owner by encouraging you to get out of your comfort zone.

3. Network Marketing Is A Group Of Like Minds

In this business, you will get to meet many people with a common goal: to achieve a better life fro them and their families. You’ll have the opportunity to share their ideals and be influenced by their passion. They will teach you how to properly manage your time and how to set your goals and realize them. You’ll also learn how to focus your attention on income producing activities and not wasting time.

4. Learn the art of sales and building relationships while building your Network Marketing Business

Without sales, a business simply won’t succeed. And the first skill that you must learn is to sell is yourself. That’s what network marketing aims to do: provide knowledge and training on how to brand you as a leader that people will want to follow.

The industry will teach you approaches and techniques that will make the sales process smooth, and a lot easier to handle. Here, you will learn how to properly deal with people and build meaningful relationships with them as you grow.

Get MLM training at NonRecruitable.com –Best part, its completely FREE!

5. Opportunity to Mentor & be Mentored by Some of The Best In Network Marketing

As a newbie, you’ll find yourself entrusted to well-experienced individuals, many have been in the business for years. They will teach you the ropes and impart useful knowledge that you will later share with your own network marketing team.

You’ll have the chance to meet mentors and leaders that you can learn valuable lessons from. Once the knowledge is imparted to you, you can use that knowledge to help others do the same. Out of all the skills you can learn, in my opinion learning to market is the most important, if you master this skill it doesn’t matter what product your company is selling.

6. When Your In Network Marketing Its Ok To Dream Big

By attending team and company meetings, group orientations, team building activities and events, and leadership trainings, you are highly encouraged to dream big and to do what it takes to make those dreams come true. You may soon find that what has been holding you back from great success is you.

You’ll get to listen to the success stories of other network marketers, and their stories will help you shape your own goals and dreams. The positive vibe emanating from them will hit you and motivate you to work hard towards reaching your maximum potential. You will meet other people who were worse off then you when they started but went on to achieve great accomplishments.

7. Network Marketing Offers Unlimited Income

How does the idea of getting paid what you’re worth sound? Having the control over the amount of money that you can earn is so invigorating. You can choose when to work and how much effort you’ll put into it. Never again having someone tell you you can’t have the time off when your child is sick, or no you can’t take your family on a vacation.

If you’re willing to maximize your income and put forth the effort to make it happen, you will be able to enjoy more income in one month than some people earn in a year, and generate an income that’s absolutely worth your efforts.

FUCOIDAN THE REAL ELIXIR OF LONGEVITY

Source: do-dietary-supplements-work.com

The Japanese are well recognized to have the longest life expectancies in the world. ―Japanese
women and men live longer and healthier than everyone else on Earth,” says Naomi Moriyama,
co-author of Japanese Women Don’t Get Old or Fat: Secrets of My Mother’s Tokyo Kitchen. One
extensive international study, the United Nations World Population Prospects 2006 Revision, listed
Japan as first among 194 countries in life expectancy. On the other hand, the United States, even
with the best health care in the world, ranked only 34th. Not coincidentally, Japan also has the lowest
obesity rate in the urbanized world. Not only can the Japanese expect to live longer but they also live
healthier. A native of Japan can anticipate an average of 75 years of healthy living free of disabilities,
reports WHO. http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/diets-of-world-japanese-diet
In Japan, breakfast is considered to be the most powerful meal of the day. A typical breakfast menu
consists of rice, egg or fish, vegetables, fruit, green tea and miso soup. The salubrious effect of
Miso soup has received increased attention in recent years. Traditionally added to Miso soup is
the extraordinary seaweed known as Wakame. So revered is this seaweed that the Japanese say,
―Wakame is food and medicine combined‖. It has been consumed by the Japanese as much as ten
thousand years ago, long known for its beneficial health qualities.

One of the primary ways in which fucoidan can benefit your health is in its ability to interact with, and
modulate the immune system. The ability of a substance to modulate the immune system is extremely
useful.

Modulation is a term used to describe the process of reducing the extremes of
cellular activity – either stimulation or inhibition. Immune modulating substances
have the ability to work in both directions. They can boost the immune system
when it is depressed (referring to conditions such as chronic fatigue) and can
also suppress the immune system when it is over-stimulated (such as in the case
of autoimmune diseases like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis).

Most immune modulating agents work by improving inter-cellular communication.
One way that cells communicate is by presenting on their surface complex,
information-rich protein (glycoprotein) macromolecules linked with molecules of
saccharides or sugars (polysaccharides). An inter-cell “message” depends on the
structure of saccharides.

For example, one message might tell a cell to start producing specific chemicals, and another
message might tell a cell when to divide. Cells have glycoprotein receptor molecules, which can read
messages from other cells and respond accordingly.
The immune system depends heavily on this kind of communication to co-ordinate cellular
defense, apoptosis, cell attack and repair processes. When any of saccharides required to build
capable glycoprotein – and thereby to pass on a correct message – is missing, the quality of that
communication is jeopardized.

It has been shown that a dietary supply of certain saccharides from brown seaweed improves the

integrity of glycoprotein production. Fucoidans provide an abundant supply of fucose, one of the
necessary saccharides, and also provide smaller amounts of several other required sugars. This is
likely to be one mechanism which enables the fucoidans to have their immunomodulatory effect.

Below is a partial list of potentially significant health and wellness benefits of fucoidan that is
extracted from different kinds of brown seaweed.

Help in maintaining immune system health

Fucoidan supports the immune system in a number of ways. Some research suggests that it may
cause an increase in the number of white blood cells, which are an integral part of the body’s natural
immune system. (Refer to the Immune System page for more information on cells of the immune
system.)

Findings from other studies suggest that fucoidan supports the immune system by activating
important immune responses, such as phagocytosis – a process by which phagocytes “swallow”
enemy cells or microbes.

Here are some reference links to research studies:

1. Antitumor activity of fucoidan (a study from Japan where fucoidan was extracted from the
brown seaweed Sargassum thunbergii.)

2. Antibacterial and immunomodulating activity of fucoidan

3. Antiviral properties of fucoidan (Fucoidan used in this study was derived from Leathesia
difformis – another kind of brown seaweed.)

Inducing process of eliminating harmful cells

Fucoidan may also prove helpful in eliminating harmful cells through a process
called apoptosis.

Apoptosis is a term for the programmed process of a cell “bursting” and dying.

Sulfated polysaccharides like fucoidan have been shown to assist in inducing
appropriate programmed apoptosis, which is a natural process where living
organisms eliminate harmful cells.

The ability to induce apoptosis is desirable, for example, when attempting to kill
tumor tissue.

1. Antitumor activity and immune response of Limu Moui fucoidan
Quote from the abstract: “We showed that fucoidan, extracted from dietary seaweed, could inhibit

tumor growth.”

2. Antitumor activity and immunological properties of marine algal
polysaccharides, especially fucoidan
Quote from the study conclusion: “These results suggest that the antitumor

activity of fucoidan is related to the enhancement of immune responses. The
present results indicate that fucoidan may open new perspectives in cancer
chemotherapy.”

3. Fucoidan extracted from brown seaweed (Cladosiphon okamuranus Tokida)
induces apoptosis of adult T-cell leukemia cells
Quote from the study conclusion: “Our results indicate that fucoidan is a

potentially useful therapeutic agent for patients with ATL (adult T-cell leukemia).”

4. Antitumor effects of fucoidan extracted from brown seaweed (ascophyllum nodosum)
Quote from the study’s conclusion: “These preliminary results indicate that HF exhibits inhibitory

effect both in vitro and in vivo and is a very potent antitumor agent in cancer therapy.”

Cell regeneration

Much of the fucoidan research has focused on its ability to support processes of cell regeneration.

There is evidence that fucoidan might support mobilization of stem cells that enable replacing of dead
cells in the body. This would also enable enabling tissue and organ regeneration.

Here is a sample study about using fucoidan for stem cells mobilization.
The study concludes that the use of sulfated glycans, including fucoidan “represents a powerful, novel

method for rapid mobilization of long-term-repopulating stem cells.”

New study finds that resveratrol may help protect human cells against exposure to nuclear material; resveratrol-based drug increased survival rates of mice exposed to radiation by more than 250 percent

Tina Benitez

There’s even more reason to convert that old bomb shelter in the backyard into a wine cellar today. Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh have published a new study indicating that resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, may help human cells survive exposure to radiation. While nuclear attack may come to mind in respect to radiation exposure and in light of terrorist threats, the drug would also be useful in the event of reactor spills or radiation leaks at hospitals or labs.

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Health Sciences, under the guidance of lead scientist Dr. John Greenberger, published a study indicating that a resveratrol-based drug called JP4-039 could counter the effects of radiation exposure. (A pure form of resveratrol in its natural state was also tested and showed improved cell-survival rates, but not as markedly as the modified resveratrol drug.) The nontoxic drug, which scientists have been testing since 2004, can help mitochondria, the energy-producing bodies in human cells, combat cell death due to exposure to radiation. In past studies, resveratrol has been shown to beneficially stimulate mitochondria.

In initial studies, funded by a $10 million grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, researchers observed tissue cultures incubated with the resveratrol-based drug after being given a large dose of radiation. When the number of surviving cells were counted, researchers found that the drug was effective in saving cells; additional tests on animals had the same results. In the animal studies, 80 percent of mice treated with the resveratrol-based drug after radiation exposure survived, compared with a 30 percent survival rate for untreated mice.

Researchers warned that individuals cannot get the same potency from drinking wine or ingesting other resveratrol-derived products in the event of an emergency. They hypothesize that resveratrol, an antioxidant compound, may act as a natural protector in the same manner as vitamin E or vitamin C, which can help the body resist radiation damage. Greenberger added that people cannot get the same protection by simply drinking or eating certain antioxidant-rich foods. He gave the example of circumin, the substance found in curry powder that is a natural radiation protector. A person would have to ingest several ounces or more of the powder to get similar results to those produced by the resveratrol compound being tested. In the end, it may cause more discomfort than help.

“You would not be able to duplicate our results by just drinking wine,” Greenberger said. “The problem is the dosing. The dosage you would need to get levels up high enough in humans would be very large amounts. You couldn’t just drink the wine or eat the grapes—you wouldn’t get enough [resveratrol].”

He added that someone would have to drink approximately 720 bottles of wine to match the results of the resveratrol compound they’ve created. “By the time someone drank that much wine,” joked Greenberger, “you wouldn’t have to worry about the radiation anymore.”

Greenberger and his team are continuing their research and hope to gain FDA clearance and begin clinical trials soon.

“We are unprepared,” said Greenberger. “We just do not have enough resources in our national stockpile to combat radiation terrorism. My biggest concern is if we have a dirty bomb or other radiological device—people could be hit with uranium or plutonium, or worse … like Hiroshima or Nagasaki. There could be people who do not have obvious burns or concussions who will have significant body radiation doses and will need some kind of therapy to help them recover. What we need is something safe that we can give to everybody, whether they have a small dose or fairly large dose of radiation.”

Most of us are ignorant about soy side effects. However, it’s time for the veil to be lifted. Is gulping down one soy product
after another healthy and safe for your body? You need to pause and listen. Soy has some very serious side effects!

We’ve always known soy beans to be healthy with ample amounts of vitamins, proteins and fiber right! So what’s this
about soy side effects? Can a nutrient prove deleterious? There are scores of lactose intolerant people across the globe
who are advised to switch to drinking soy milk because of their inability to drink cow’s milk. Moreover, vegans depend on
soy for a large portion of their protein intake. If soy is detrimental, would they be given this advice? Moreover, what about
all the soy health products available in health stores? Are soy dangers just a fad or is there some truth to it? Let’s find out!

Side Effects of Soy

Studies reveal that only one side of the soy coin has been revealed. Food companies and drug manufacturing companies
have been touting the benefits of soy for decades together. However, they have conveniently ignored the existent soy
risks. So what exactly are the different soy side effects?

Phytic Acid Content
Soy contains large quantities of phytic acid, which when introduced into the body after consumption, prevents the body
from absorbing essential minerals and vitamins in the digestive tract. This can conduce to several deficiencies and health
problems even though the person is consuming a diet rich in essential vitamins and minerals. Absorption of minerals like
calcium, iodine, iron gets hampered and these essential and important minerals are for the proper functioning of our body.

Hormone Supplier
Soy contains high amounts of plant compounds that are similar to the female hormone estrogen called phytoestrogens.
Often post-menopausal women take soy products in order to control hot flashes and problems associated with hormonal
imbalances. Thus, here we see that soy furnishes our body with hormones. However, what about babies, children and
young women who do not require this hormone addition? The extra hormone content could trigger early puberty in
children, which may conduce to cancer. Young women consuming a lot of soy are at a greater risk of breast cancer.

Isoflavone Content
Soy contains high amounts of phytochemicals called isoflavones, which are known to be linked to diseases like leukemia
and breast cancer. A study conducted in the year 2008, revealed that men who consumed a diet in which half their food
items were soy products, faced a lower concentration of sperm count. The researchers found that this low sperm count
was related to the amount of isoflavones consumed via the rich soy diet.

Goitrogens
Goitrogens present in soy are substances that have the ability to suppress the functioning of the thyroid gland. They
interfere with the iodine uptake and conduce to enlargement of the thyroid gland. Thus, consuming high amounts of soy
products will result in weight gain and other thyroid problems.

Phytoestrogens

Excessive consumption
of soy apparently seems to contribute too much estrogen into our bodies. So, eating too much soy might make men a bit
more ‘in touch with their feminine side’. Other things associated with soy is that the estrogen level spike in the male body
leads to growth of breasts in men and a marked reduction in sexual prowess.

Other more disturbing researches show that over-consumption of soy in infant and children may lead to more than just
effeminacy. Researchers claim that too much estrogen in men might make them think and act like women and slowly
make them infertile. So it seems like over-consumption of soy is terrible for men on account of the estrogen levels. But
it must be terrific for women right? Wrong. Like a rationed and rational consumption of soy helps avoid cancer, over-
consumption can lead to stimulation of growth of cancerous cells in females.

Reducing the Dangers of Soy Products
These dangers of soy are potential ones that can occur only when a person consumes large amount of it for a longer
time. Therefore, it is advisable to consume soy products in limited amount and not rely only on it for proteins. Many people
debate that Asians consume soy on a regular basis but still do not experience any negative effects. The reason for it is
that Asians use soy as a condiment and hence, consume it in small amounts. What we are unaware of is that there are
several risks and long term side effects associated with soy. Let us have a look at it in detail.

Dangers of Soy Products
Soy beans or soy naturally contains toxins like trypsin inhibitors, hemaglutinin, phytic acid, and phytoestrogens. The
presence of these anti-nutrients give rise to several side effects or negative effects on consuming soy products. However,
one should know that these are only potential dangers that can occur only when soy products are taken in large amounts
regularly such as in meal replacement powders and bulk food products. Let us have a look at it in detail.

•Trypsin inhibitors in soy products interfere with protein digestion and can lead
to disorders of the pancreas. The protein enzyme inhibitors present in soy block the
action of trypsin and enzymes which are required for protein digestion.

•The Hemaglutinin is responsible for clumping of red blood cells together to form
clots which can obstruct several body functions.

•One of the other dangers of soy occurs due to the presence of phytic acid
or phytates. It inhibits the absorption of certain essential minerals like calcium,
magnesium, zinc, iron and inhibit the benefits of other foods and nutrients in the body.
This in turn leads to increase in the requirement of vitamin D.

•Soy is believed to have a greater adverse effect on the thyroid gland. The
phytoestrogens in soy products can cause hypothyroidism and autoimmune thyroid
diseases in people.

•One of the biggest dangers of soy for women is that it is believed to contain
phytoestrogens which works in similar way as estrogen (a female hormone) that
can aid in menopausal symptoms and may even lead to reproductive disorders. In
females, soy can lead to abnormalities in the reproductive tract, which can give rise
to infertility. These soy dangers for women should be taken care of, or else, they can
become intense. Soy can also contribute to endometrial cancer in females.

•The level of phytoestrogen is high in soy, which decreases the testosterone
present in the male body. It also affects the production of sperms. Phytoestrogen also
leads to early puberty and early developments of adolescents. These are a few of the
soy dangers for men.

•Soy also contains considerable amounts of aluminum that can lead to several
kidney diseases if consumed in large amounts.

•Those advocating for soy should also be aware of the potential dangers of soy
proteins. It is proposed that soy foods Isoflavones present in soy causes diseases like
leukemia and breast cancer.

•The presence of toxic aluminum in soy can also affect the nervous system and
the kidneys in a negative way.

•In some cases, it is also causes dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, colitis and may
increase or decrease the pulse rate. Very often, soy causes runny nose and nasal
congestion. This can also develop allergies like congestion, coughing, sneezing, etc.
in some people. Wheezing, fatigue and fever are the other symptoms observed as a
reaction to soy.

•Some of the soy dangers for children are learning disorders, attention deficit
disorder, dyslexia, etc. It can also cause pancreatic and growth related problems. At
times, the amount of manganese present in soy is large enough to cause damage to
the cortex.

•It also contributes to skin problems like sudden and severe eczema, acne,
blisters, canker sores, swelling and hives.

•In severe cases, it can also cause a problem in swallowing and can also cause
anaphylactic shock.

•Soy can also affect the energy levels and sleep.

•In some cases, it can give rise to chronic pain. Mostly, people suffering from
asthma are prone to this kind of disorders.

•If soy milk is consumed in large amounts, it can lead to stomach problems.

•The soy milk estrogen is harmful for babies.

The Dark Underbelly

Where the benefits of soy products end, the dark facet emerges. Over the years, as the popularity of soy has held fort
for the above mentioned benefits, researchers have also discovered several ill effects of soy which offset the gains.

(please do consult your physician before you start on soy in very large amounts)
